What Is Kyo-yaki?

Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki are among Kyoto’s most celebrated traditional crafts.
Originally, the name referred to pottery produced mainly around the Kiyomizu-zaka area in Kyoto city, but today, it is used as a collective term for ceramics created in kilns throughout Kyoto.

Developed in the early Edo period, Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki flourished in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto alongside the rise of the tea ceremony culture.
